Pete Bevin - Internet work
...Yeah, I'm a web geek, both professionally and for
fun.
I got my first Internet account back in the late 80s - before the Web. I try
hard to use it to bring people together, rather than contribute to making the
Internet "just another advertising medium". Unfortunately, I haven't
found a way to do that for real money, so mostly I do it for free.
- I run a number of cancer related web sites.
- I keep some tools for solving crossword puzzles.
- I was once (at least partly!) responsible for FSP*
until it died a death. Maybe if people are right about the imminent demise
of the Internet, it'll become useful again. It still needs a good protocol
rewrite, though.
- I used to do combinatorial optimization*
for a British company called ICL, where
I wrote the scheduling bits of TankerPower, a system for Texaco to schedule their road
fleet. A lot of fun, and pretty um...challenging. Part of that business
was bought out in 1998 and trades as ServicePower - using pretty much the code I wrote back in 1992!
- I keep a guide to RFC documents, which tries to keep
track of the juicier papers. The main feature is a guide to all the joke standards.
